A clear correlation between their electronic and molecular structures was stablished. Insights into their closed- or open-shell ground states were gained, where particular contribution of the heptagonal carbocycles as end-groups was proved. Remarkably, a thermally accessible triplet diradical configuration was confirmed for theDBHept-TBCcompound.MICIU/FEDER/AEI, Spain PG2018-101181-B-I00 PGC2018-095808B-I00 MAT2016-80826-R FIP-2018-HECTIC-PTM Prometeo2019/076MICIU/FEDER/AEI, Spain ("Severo Ochoa" Programme for Centres of Excellence in RD) SEV-2015-0496European Research Council (ERC) 677023DGR (Catalunya) 2017-SGR-918Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) PZ00P2_17417

From the juvenile to the adult vegetative phase in olive seedlings: the transition along the stem axis

    Get PDF
Sexual reproduction in olive is carried out for purposes such as breeding. The seedlings evolve from the juvenile to the adult stage, and until now, only the discrete developmental phases have been investigated in detail. However, the transition process has been poorly studied in fruit trees, especially in olive. In this paper, juvenile to adult transition has been explored in 30 olive seedlings coming from the Table Olive Breeding Program of the University of Sevilla, Spain. Despite of the great variability found in the olive leaf morphological parameters, mean values increased linearly from the bottom (juvenile) to the top (adult tissue) of the seedling. An upward lineal decrease in the rooting ability was also observed for the set of seedlings evaluated. No significant differences were found for the maximum net photosynthesis (PNmax) or maximum stomatal conductance (gsmax), although the lowest values were measured at <0.5 m. For all of the analysed parameters, the transitional tissue showed intermediate values. These results show for the first time in olive that the transition along the seedling stem axis follows a clear lineal tendency with a stepwise loss of juvenile characters being the shift from juvenile to adult phase in olive not an abrupt change but a gradual process. The usefulness of a fibre optic probe with a reduced sampling surface coupled to near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was evaluated. NIR analysis has been confirmed to be a useful tool to discriminate the juvenile and adult leaves, but not the transition one

A Wireless Portable High Temperature Data Monitor for Tunnel Ovens

    Get PDF
Tunnel ovens are widely used in the food industry to produce biscuits and pastries. In order to obtain a high quality product, it is very important to control the heat transferred to each piece of dough during baking. This paper proposes an innovative, non-distorting, low cost wireless temperature measurement system, called “eBiscuit”, which, due to its size, format and location in the metal rack conveyor belt in the oven, is able to measure the temperature a real biscuit experience while baking. The temperature conditions inside the oven are over 200 °C for several minutes, which could damage the “eBiscuit” electronics. This paper compares several thermal insulating materials that can be used in order to avoid exceeding the maximum operational conditions (80 °C) in the interior of the “eBiscuit. The data registered is then transmitted to a base station where information can be processed to obtain an oven model. The experimental results with real tunnel ovens confirm its good performance, which allows detecting production anomalies early on

Aggregation-induced emission of [3]cumulenes functionalized with heptagon-containing polyphenylenes

This is accepted manuscript, the final published article is available in "García Jiménez, V.; et al. Aggregation-induced emission of [3]cumulenes functionalized with heptagon-containing polyphenylenes. Chemical Communications, online (2018). DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/C8CC00386FWe report the luminiscence at room temperature by aggregate formation of [3]cumulenes functionalized with propeller-like heptagon-containing polyphenylenes. These endgroups turn on the emission of a [3]cumulene by steric protection and restriction of their intramolecular rotations in the aggregates.European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (ERC-2015 -677023).Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO, Spain – FEDER) (CTQ2015-70283-P, CTQ2014-53598-R, RyC-2013-12943).Fundação para a Ciência e a tecnologia (Portugal, IF/00759/2013, SFRH/BPD/75782/2011,SFRH/BPD/96707/2013,UID/NAN/50024/2013)

An IoT Platform for Epilepsy Monitoring and Supervising

    Get PDF
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder with several different types of seizures, some of them characterized by involuntary recurrent convulsions, which have a great impact on the everyday life of the patients. Several solutions have been proposed in the literature to detect this type of seizures and to monitor the patient; however, these approaches lack in ergonomic issues and in the suitable integration with the health system. This research makes an in-depth analysis of the main factors that an epileptic detection and monitoring tool should accomplish. Furthermore, we introduce the architecture for a specific epilepsy detection and monitoring platform, fulfilling these factors. Special attention has been given to the part of the system the patient should wear, providing details of this part of the platform. Finally, a partial implementation has been deployed and several tests have been proposed and carried out in order to make some design decisions

Cerebral changes and disrupted gray-matter cortical networks in asymptomatic older adults at risk for Alzheimer's disease

The diagnostic value of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers is well established in Alzheimer's disease, but our current knowledge about how abnormal CSF levels affect cerebral integrity, at local and network levels, is incomplete in asymptomatic older adults. Here, we have collected CSF samples and performed structural magnetic resonance imaging scans in cognitively normal elderly as part of a cross-sectional multicenter study (SIGNAL project). To identify group differences in cortical thickness, white matter volume, and properties of structural networks, participants were split into controls (N = 20), positive amyloid-? (A?1?42 +) (N = 19), and positive phosphorylated tau (N = 18). The A?1?42 + group exhibited thickening of middle temporal regions, while positive phosphorylated tau individuals showed thinning in the superior parietal and orbitofrontal cortices. Subjects with abnormal CSF biomarkers further showed regional white matter atrophy and more segregated cortical networks, the A?1?42 + group showing heightened isolation of cingulate and temporal cortices. Collectively, these findings highlight the relevance of combining structural brain imaging and connectomics for in vivo tracking of Alzheimer's disease lesions in asymptomatic stages. This work was supported by research grants from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (SAF2011-25463 to J.L.C., PSI2014-55747-R to M.A.), the Carlos III Institute of Health, Spain (PI11/02425 and PI14/01126 to J.F.; PI11/3035 and PI14/1561 to A.L.; PI08/0139, PI12/02288 and PI16/01652 to P.S.J.), jointly funded by Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), Unión Europea, “Una manera de hacer Europa”, the Joint Programming in Neurodegenerative Disease Research (DEMTEST to P.S.J.), “Marató TV3” (project 20141210 to J.F. and 20142610 to A.L.), the Regional Ministry of Innovation, Science and Enterprise, Junta de Andalucia (P12- CTS-2327 to J.C.L.), and the CIBERNED program (Signal project)
